Big Island to host a U.S. Tennis Fed Cup!

A big E Komo Mai to Venus Williams

The U.S. Fed Cup team will get a taste of the Aloha Spirit as Hawaii serves as the host when the Americans take on Poland in the 2016 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round. The outdoor hard-court tie will take place Feb. 6-7 at Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. The best-of-five-match series begins on Saturday, Feb. 6, with two singles match, followed by two reverse singles matches and the doubles match on Sunday, Feb. 7.

This marks the first time that Hawaii has ever hosted a Fed Cup tie. “We are thrilled to bring Fed Cup to Hawaii, as the USTA continues to grow the game of tennis in communities nationwide,” said Katrina Adams, USTA Chairman of the Board, CEO and President. “Kailua Kona will create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere for Fed Cup and is a perfect location for our players. We look forward to Hawaii fans filling the stands and coming out to cheer Team USA to victory.”

The U.S. holds a 3-0 all-time record over Poland in the Fed Cup and has yet to lose an individual match in the series. The U.S. last faced Poland in the 1990 World Group First Round in Atlanta, sweeping the tie, 3-0. The Americans also swept the Poles during ties held in 1974 and 1980.

Competing for the U.S. Fed Cup team this year is world No. 10 Venus Williams, No. 26 Sloane Stephens, and No. 42 CoCo Vandeweghe, along with doubles specialist Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Poland’s highest ranked competing player is world No. 93, Magda Linette. The winner will advance to the World Group playoffs for a chance to move back up to the competition’s top tier in 2017.
