It was the year 2010
when we first vacationed on The Big Island, in the wonderful resort of Waikoloa. We investigated the entire area and kept finding ourselves drawn to the gates of Kolea. We peered through the bars…. total tourist lookee loos. While we chatted back and forth about the beauty of the complex, a flamed golf cart pulled up to us. “Would you guys like to come in and look around?” Would we EVER!!! We didn’t hesitate to walk right through the now open gates. The gentleman shook our hands and introduced himself as the community honorary mayor. He told us his name… but only The Mayor stuck. He handed us his card. We felt so privileged to stroll the grounds. Some day we thought… some day.
3 years later we finally booked a condo in Kolea for our 2 week vacation stay. We were so excited. Kolea did not let us down. We were in heaven. What a perfect location, on the beach and within walking distance to great restaurants and shopping . We lounged by the pool, strolled on the beach, dined ourselves silly and watched the stars from our lanai in the evenings. We thought wouldn’t it be something to own a condo here? Wouldn’t it be something….
One evening while relaxing in our rented condo we decided to see if there were any units in Kolea for sale. There were and there was one, in particular, that drew our attention. We decided to call The Mayor. Doesn’t hurt to look.
We met Johnny in front of building 14. After introductions we went upstairs to unit L. Johnny opened the door, we took off our shoes and walked in. As we rounded the corner a turquoise blue ocean with swaying palm tree views leapt out at us. He opened the lanai doors and a gentle breeze blew in. The condo was decorated in a lovely tropical Asian theme. I turned to my husband and said this is it. If we are ever going to purchase a condo in Kolea, this is the one.
I dropped my horse ranch plans and we sat down with Johnny. The tourist lookee loos from 4 years ago made an offer.
You see, from the beginning, The Mayor, Johnny, never treated us like tourist lookee loos. He treated us like we belonged there, like dreams really do come true. If you had said we were going to spontaneously purchase a condo, in Hawaii, while on vacation, we would have laughed in your face. No Way!!! We never buy anything without tons of research! We knew nothing about buying property in The Hawaiian Islands and we do not jump into things. Johnny reassured us that he would take us through this thing, step, by step. And let me tell you, there are lots of steps when purchasing property in Hawaii when you’re on The Main Land. We decided to put our trust in him. We made our offer and then had to fly home. Several days later we in escrow. We own 2 small business operations and were crazy busy when we got back from vacation. Never mind Christmas was just a few weeks away. We didn’t have time to focus on any one thing. Johnny grabbed the reins and took charge. He was in touch with us every day. We told him we would have to mainly communicate via e-mail and only chat on the phone when something was urgent. He was awesome. He handled everything for us. Even writing the letters that we needed to put together for the cable and electric companies… “just sign here guys.” He suggested an insurance agent and we found we have tons in common with him. A new friend.
We also learned when buying a vacation rental you have to time everything perfectly so the tenants in your condo are not inconvenienced when the unit changes hands. It becomes quite an artful dance. Johnny put on his dancing shoes and made sure that they never even knew anything was happening. As things go, we had some hiccups. No worries, Johnny went over and beyond the call of a real estate agent. So many times during this purchase we found ourselves saying, “What would we have done without Johnny, What would we have done?”

For at least a year …

He has first hand knowledge of the market. He is very pro-active in terms of both seeking out buyers and in handling the details of transactions. He always puts his clients’ interests first. We decided to sell …
our property in a down market and we interviewed several brokers. We chose Johnny because he was recommended by a fellow professional and because he appeared at our interview well prepared with market conditions and facts. What we did not know, then, was that we were becoming acquainted with a man who was about to become a dynamic team member on our side. A man who has, not only the facts, but honesty and perseverance. He has dogged every piece of paper and red tape that was supposed to arrive in escrow until it did. His communication skill is great; proficient in email, fax and phone; he has kept our sale moving and us aware of every step. We must stress his honesty and forthrightness.
